Frequently Asked Questions
Where does lorem ipsum text come from?
Lorem ipsum text comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil) written by Cicero in 45 BC. The text was scrambled and modified in the 1500s for use as placeholder text by typesetters, and has been standard placeholder text ever since.
Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text for mockups?
Lorem ipsum prevents readers from being distracted by actual words and focusing on layout, typography and visual hierarchy instead. If you use real text in mockups, people tend to read and critique the words rather than evaluating the design. Placeholder text keeps the focus on form, not content.
Is there a problem with using lorem ipsum for websites?
Lorem ipsum should never appear in a live published website. Search engines cannot meaningfully index it and users will immediately notice something is broken. Always replace all placeholder text with real, meaningful content before launching any website, blog or application.
What is the first line of lorem ipsum?
The classic lorem ipsum passage begins: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua." This is the most recognizable form, used by designers since the 1960s in desktop publishing.
